Horace Seegmiller, 86, of Decorah, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, at the Aase Hauge Nursing Home in Decorah. Services were at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan.17, at First United Methodist Church in Decorah, with Rev. John Caldwell officiating. Organist was Kathy Tollefsrud. "Children Of The Heavenly Father" and "How Great Thou Art." Special music was "This Little Light of Mine and On Eagle's Wings." Interment is in Phelps Cemetery, Decorah, in the spring. Casket bearers were David Seegmiller, Brad Seegmiller, Clint Seegmiller, Joel Farley, Jason Farley and Jeremy Farley. Arrangements were handled by Schluter - Balik Funeral Home in Decorah.

Horace Telford Seegmiller was born April 11, 1927, the son of Will and Louisa (Spilde) Seegmiller near Decorah. Horace was baptized July 31, 1927, and confirmed Oct. 26, 1941, both at St. John's Lutheran Church in Locust. Horace attended Canoe No. 3, Springwater country school, and then graduated from Decorah High School in 1946. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Seegmiller Aug. 26, 1953, at the Methodist Church in La Crescent, Minn. They were the parents of four children: Rodney, Mark, Daryl and Donna Kay. Horace was a farmer and farmed the Seegmiller family farm that was homesteaded in 1860. Horace also was a 'jack of all trades' and helped crush rock and lime with his brothers, hauled John Deere equipment and did custom farming. He enjoyed grain farming in Oklee, Minn. for 35 years, harvesting wheat, oats, flax, barley and sunflowers. Horace enjoyed John Deere tractors, his convertibles and toy trains. Horace and Dorothy moved into Decorah in 2005 and into the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in May of 2009. He was a good steward of the land and will be remembered for the love of his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Horace was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Horace is survived by his wife, Dorothy Seegmiller, Decorah; three sons: Rodney (Sue Baker) Seegmiller, Ridgeway; Mark (Joan) Seegmiller, Postville; and Daryl Seegmiller, Decorah; one daughter, Donna Kay (Paul) Farley, Decorah; grandchildren: David (Amanda) Seegmiller, Julie (Chad) Jaster, Cole Baker, Brad (Brandy Nobles) Seegmiller, Brooke Seegmiller, Brittany (Hector) Vivero, Clint (Kristina Ryan) Seegmiller, Shannon (Brandon) Hartley, Joel (Ashley) Farley, Jason (Stephanie) Farley and Jeremy Farley; great-grandchildren: Olivia Seegmiller, Brady and Paige Jaster, Deonte, Liland and Aliza Seegmiller, Yosalin and Hector Vivero, Jr., Dominic Seegmiller, Kaeley and Evynne Downing, Gage and Clara Hartley, Adalyn and Easton Farley, and Haidyn and Carson Farley; one sister-in-law, Gertrude Seegmiller, Rochester, Minn.; brothers and sisters-in-law: Wayne (Margaret) Seegmiller, Queen City, Mo.; Ruth (Bob) Kerns, Sun City West, Ariz.; Fern (Jon) Schmid, Sun City West, Ariz.; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews and cousins.

Horace was preceded in death by his parents, Will and Louisa (Spilde) Seegmiller; two grandsons, Brian Seegmiller and Kyle Baker; one daughter-in-law, Shelly (Bartlett) Seegmiller; one sister, Evelyn (Willet) Sampson; three brothers: Jesse (Florence) Seegmiller, Floyd Seegmiller and Telford (Evelyn) Seegmiller; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Orval and Agnes (Sersland) Seegmiller; one brother-in-law, Orval (Pam) Seegmiller, Jr.
