Francis Hageman, 92, of Calmar, died Monday, July 14, 2014, at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian. Mass of Christian Burial was at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 17, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Mass servers were Marcus Kriener, Bradley Kriener and Quentin Hageman. Lectors were Carol Gaul and Sue Rieland. Pianist was Jeanette Dietzenbach. Soloist was Jenny Kuennen (“Prayer of St. Francis”). Prelude music was “Daddy’s Hands” and “Be Not Afraid.” The St. Aloysius Choir sang “Here I am Lord,” “Gift of Finest Wheat,” “Not the First Mile” and “How Great Thou Art.” Offertory gift bearers were Heather Gamm,  Malissa Freidhof and Breann Hageman. Eucharistic ministers were Kathy Kuennen  and Jenny Kuennen. Casket bearers were Annette Kriener, Scott Mikesh, Bill Kuennen, Bob Kuennen, Ryan Hageman and Aaron Hageman. Interment was at St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery in Calmar. Arrangements were handled by Schluter – Balik Funeral Home.

Francis John Hageman was born Jan. 22, 1922, the son of August and Theresa (Schmitt) Hageman, just north of Festina where his love of farming began. He graduated from 8th grade at Festina Grade School. Francis married Anna Brincks at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar June 25, 1946, and to this union three children were born: Norma, Lynn and Laura. They farmed north of Calmar until 1980 and then moved into his parent’s home in Calmar. He continued to help his son Lynn on the family farm for several years. He and Anna enjoyed dancing, traveling, 4th of July parties and card club with a wonderful group of friends. He had a spontaneous sense of humor, which was greatly loved by his children and grandchildren.  He had a strong Catholic faith and was a member of the St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar. Francis was a true farmer at heart and had a strong love for the land and the outdoors.

Francis is survived by his wife of 68 years, Anna Hageman, Calmar; son, Lynn (Julie) Hageman, Calmar; two daughters, Norma (Alan) Freidhof, West Union; Laura (Randy) Kuennen, Ft. Atkinson; 13 grandchildren: Annette (Arlen) Kriener, Scott (Kelley) Mikesh, Heather (Blake) Gamm, Malissa (special friend Scott) Freidhof, Ryan (Beth) Hageman, Aaron Hageman, Breann Hageman, Carol (Mike) Gaul, Bill (Katie) Kuennen, Sue (Paul) Rieland, Bob Kuennen, Kathy Kuennen, and Jenny Kuennen; 13 great-grandchildren: Bradley, Marcus, Jordan and Mitchell Kriener; Josie Mikesh; Madison, Noah and Mason Gaul; Colin and Claire Kuennen; Patrick Rieland; Alex Hageman and Trent Gamm, with another on the way; his siblings: Eugene Hageman, Decorah; Delbert Hageman Decorah; Robert (Joann) Hageman, Decorah; Marie Brincks, Ossian; and Helen Dietzenbach, Ossian; sisters-in-law, Dolores Hageman, Cresco and Joyce Hageman, Ossian; along with many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and -nephews.

Francis was preceded in death by his parents, August Hageman, Dec. 5, 1972 and Theresa (Schmitt) Hageman, Jan. 26, 1992; mother- and father–in-law, Herman (Pauline Weber) Brincks, brothers: August Hageman Jr., Louis Hageman, Leonard Hageman and Cornelius (in infancy); brothers- and sisters-in-law: Frances Hageman, Francis Dietzenbach, Patricia Hageman, Clarence Brincks, Ray (Hildegard) Brincks, Rose (Laverne) Meyer, Mary (Herman) Bullerman, Ralph (Olivia) Holthaus, Theresa (Louis) Bullerman.
