Duane Shanks, 60, of Decorah, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at his home. Services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at Henrytown Lutheran Church in Henrytown, Minn., with Rev. Paul Thompson officiating. Organist was Luanne Storelee. Hymns were "Amazing Grace," "Precious Lord" and "On Eagles' Wings." Eulogy was by Butch Helgeson and Curtis Vick. Interment was at Henrytown Cemetery in Henrytown, Minn. Honorary casketbearers were Duane's grandchildren, Nicole Panos and Tristan Shanks. Military rites were by Decorah All Vet's, Decorah. Arrangements were handled by Schluter - Balik Funeral Home.
Duane Garland Shanks was born Nov. 28, 1952, the son of Royce and June (Dohrmann) Shanks in Zumbrota, Minn. Duane graduated from Mabel-Canton High School and attended Winona Tech for one year. He served in the US Army from 1972-74. Duane was united in marriage to Denise Frana Jan. 14, 1978, at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah. Duane worked for 37 years at Cam Car (Infastech) in Decorah, retiring last November for health reasons. Over the years, Duane enjoyed golfing and had two holes-in-one on No. 4 and No. 8 at Silvercrest. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and hunting trips with his brothers and the Brynsaas boys. He always enjoyed visiting and having a beer with all his friends, but above all he enjoyed his family and grandchildren.
Duane's survivors include his wife, Denise Shanks, Decorah; two children, Jeremiah (Stacy) Shanks, Ridgeway and Melissa Shanks, Decorah; two grandchildren, Nicole Panos and Tristan Shanks; two brothers, Mike (Cindy) Shanks, Canton, Minn. and Daniel (Margo) Shanks, Canton, Minn.; one sister-in-law, Lynell Shanks, Harmony, Minn.; Duane's father- and mother-in-law, Dennis and Darlene Frana, Decorah; brothers- and sisters-in-law: Daryl (Sue) Frana, Decorah, Doreen (Jeff) Roney, Decorah, Donette (Bill) Trisler, Tulsa, Okla. Douglas Frana, Kendallville, Dean (Maria) Frana, Decorah, Dawn (Bob) Hawkins, Caledonia, Minn.; along with many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and -nephews.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents, Royce Shanks, Dec. 25, 1996 and June Shanks, May 22, 2013; and by his brother, Steven Shanks, Oct. 27, 2010.
