Cheryl Bergan, 74, of Decorah, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2014, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah. Services were at 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 10, at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in Decorah, with Mark Kvale officiating. Organist was Paul Bruvold. Soloist was Paul Casterton ("The Lord's Prayer"). Hymns were "Amazing Grace," "On Eagles' Wings" and "What A Friend We Have in Jesus." Special memories were offered by Cheryl's grandchildren. Interment was at Washington Prairie Cemetery, Decorah. Honorary casketbearers were all of Cheryl's bridge and card club members. Casketbearers were David Cook, Sydney Bergan, Bryant Cook, Avery Bergan, Kirk Snitker, Mike Bergan, Richard Matter, Jerry Johnson.

Cheryl Ann (Ellingson) Bergan was born Dec. 15, 1939, the daughter of Harris and Henrietta (Hendrickson) Ellingson, north of Decorah. Cheryl was baptized and confirmed at the Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church. She attended Pleasant Township No. 7 School and graduated from Decorah High School in 1958. When growing up, Cheryl enjoyed riding horses. After high school, Cheryl worked in St. Paul, Minn. at a bank from 1959-63. She was united in marriage to Duane Bergan March 9, 1963, at the Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church. Cheryl was a homemaker and enjoyed playing bridge, cards, reading, bowling, watching TV; especially the Price is Right and As the World Turns. She was always a good cook, but was always willing to go out to eat. Cheryl enjoyed watching the UNI marching band at football games. She also loved attending family events, especially ones that included watching her grandchildren. Cheryl was a member of the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, where she helped teach Sunday school and also audit the church books.

Cheryl is survived by her two children, Debbie (Bruce) Cook, Ventura and Marc (Kim) Bergan, Baldwin City, Kan.; four grandchildren: David and Bryant Cook and Sydney and Avery Bergan; one sister, Sandra Pierce, Sacramento, CA. Sisters and brothers-in-law: Lorena Ellingson, Decorah, IA; Mary Ellingson, Decorah; Calvin Snitker, Waukon; Edward Shelby, Summerton, N.C.; Daryl (Donna) Bergan, Decorah; Elaine (Jerry) Gipp, Decorah; Linda (Stuart) Collins, Burnsville, Minn.; Donna Gavle, Decorah; and Norvin Anderson, Decorah; along with many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and -nephews.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents, Harris and Henrietta (Hendrickson) Ellingson; her husband, Duane Bergan, July 30, 2011; one granddaughter, Alexandra Bergan, Dec. 5, 2008; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Orval and Adeline (Haugen) Bergan; brothers and sisters: Tilman Ellingson, Mervin Ellingson, Orval Ellingson, Adelaide Shelby and Esther (Willard) Grotegut; brother-in-law, Darrell Pierce and sisters-in-law, Diane Anderson and Kathleen Snitker.
