Thrifty White Pharmacy, based in Plymouth, Minn., is purchasing Medicap Pharmacy from Sue and Douglas Burks of Decorah.
The change in ownership will occur after the close of business Tuesday, July 23. Most of the current pharmacy team will remain on staff. Many other services will be added in the near future, such as the ability to have refills of monthly medications managed.
"With our Medication Synchronization Program we can arrange to have all of your monthly maintenance prescriptions filled and ready for you to pick up on one day each month. Your records will be available and your prescriptions will be ready to be filled on Wednesday morning, July 24," said Dave Rueter, vice president of personnel for Thrifty White.
"Doug and I would like to thank the residents of Northeastern Iowa and Southeastern Minnesota for their loyal support of Medicap Pharmacy. We have worked hard to earn the trust of our customers, and therefore we feel an obligation to leave them in good hands," said Sue Burks.
"We are convinced that Thrifty White shares our commitment to providing quality pharmaceutical care in an environment of professional integrity and compassion and respect for our customers. Thrifty White is well-positioned to advance our services and to continue the tradition of excellent customer service you have come to expect from Medicap Pharmacy," she said.
Thrifty White Pharmacy will keep the same hours as Medicap Pharmacy. Hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Saturday 8:30-1:30 and closed on Sundays. Thrifty White Pharmacy will offer the same services currently provided such as prescription mail out service, deliveries and an interest-free, 30-day charge program. Current phone numbers for the pharmacy will continue to be used.
Thrifty White Pharmacy has contracts with most insurance companies and should be able to fill prescriptions even if the insurance hasn't been accepted in the past. Customers should let store personnel know which insurance plan they want to use, and staff members will look into contracting that provider.
"We will continue to service the prescription needs of the local nursing homes and continue delivery service to Calmar and Ossian," Rueter said.
Thrifty White Pharmacy is an employee-owned chain of 90 drug stores. Only current and past employees own shares of the company. Employees own 100 percent of the company and share in the results of the company through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).
"This means that the employees that live and work in Decorah will be owners in the company," Rueter said.
Thrifty White has been in business since 1884 and has operated pharmacies in communities throughout North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Montana.
Surrounding Thrifty White stores are located in Clear Lake, Clarion, Webster City and Waseca, Minn.
"All of the prescription records from the pharmacy in Decorah are available to our pharmacists in all other Thrifty White stores if you need a prescription filled while traveling. Thrifty White Pharmacy is very excited to be in Decorah and looks forward to providing for the health care needs of the community as we have in similar communities for over 125 years," Rueter said.
