The 33rd annual Lutheran Summer Music Academy and Festival (LSM) will return to Luther College for a sixth consecutive year, bringing more than 50 free concerts and recitals to the Decorah area between June 22 and July 20.

This year, LSM welcomes renowned vocalist Simon Estes as the 2014 guest artist. Estes, joined by members of the LSM faculty, will perform a free concert for the public at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25, at the Center for Faith & Life on the Luther College campus.

Estes, a native of Centerville, teaches at Iowa State University and Wartburg College. An internationally acclaimed opera performer, he maintains an active schedule of performances and master classes throughout Iowa and across the U.S.

Additionally, the LSM brass faculty will perform at Lawn Chair Night at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 26. The event will take place on the Courthouse lawn in downtown Decorah. Featured performers include Paul Morton (trumpet); Ashley Hall (trumpet); Bruce Atwell (French horn); Dylan Chmura-Moore (trombone); and Stephanie Frye (tuba).

The LSM Concert and Recital Series, which is free and open to the public, will include 50+ performances between June 23 and July 21. Recitals will be held in Luther’s Noble Recital Hall and the Center for Faith and Life.  The public is invited to join the LSM community for a brief service of evening worship with additional musical offerings following each performance.

During the final week of LSM, events culminate in a festival of performances including the LSM Bach Cantata Worship Service Sunday, July 13, at 10 a.m. and the LSM Hymn Festival on Wednesday, July 16, at 7 p.m. Performances by the LSM Band (July 18), Choir (July 19) and Orchestra (July 20) also will be featured. During this final week, hundreds of parents and friends of the program will fill area hotels to capacity and patronize area businesses.

About Lutheran Summer Music
Since 1982, LSM has fostered musical excellence in a nurturing community for high school band, orchestra, choir, piano, and organ students of all faith backgrounds. More than 150 high school students from across the country will attend the four-week residential training and performance program.

Open to students of all religious backgrounds, LSM encourages students to use music as a catalyst for the exploration of personal faith and creativity. Selected through an application and audition process, LSM students engage in a comprehensive and diverse program that includes individual instrument lessons; chamber ensembles; jazz and early music ensembles; musicianship classes; orchestra, choir, and/or band; electives ranging from handbell choirs to conducting; and a culminating festival of performances.
