All Friends of the Decorah Public Library and the public are invited to attend the Friends annual meeting Monday, April 28, at 7 p.m.

The Friends and guests will convene in the mezzanine of the library.  Following a very brief business meeting, the guest presenter will be Elaine Myhre Hegg, author of "Death in a One-Room Country School." Hegg’s book weaves the story of rural schoolteacher Inga Magnusson, who was murdered in Dec. 1921, at the Bergen School, located one mile from a settlement called Bee, on the Minnesota-Iowa border.  The site was in Allamakee County, four miles northwest of Dorchester, and seven miles south of Spring Grove, Minn.

Hegg’s knowledge of Inga’s tragic murder began in her childhood, as her father told the stories of what had happened to his teacher. The country schoolhouse had been built on land sold by Elaine’s great-great grandfather. Following years of research, Hegg compiled her work into the book Death in a One-Room Country School.

Elaine Myhre Hegg is a graduate of Luther College with a degree in English.  he grew up north of Decorah, on a farm in Pleasant Township. She enjoys historical research and preserving the past and sharing her work through her writing, drama, storytelling, letters and diaries. Previous to publishing "Death in a One-Room Country School," Hegg researched and wrote the book "The Story of Washington Prairie and the Land Beyond."
