An unknown amount of damage was caused after a fire at The Old Store in Frankville Monday night.
The owners of the business, Gary and Carol Leiran, were returning to Frankville from Decorah at about 10:15 p.m. when they smelled smoke coming from the building and called 911, according to Frankville Fire Chief Monty Wilder.
The store had been closed for the day Monday, he said.
The Frankville Fire Department responded, assisted by the Postville, Castalia, Ossian and Decorah fire departments.
The cause of the fire has not been determined. Also providing assistance were the Frankville ambulance, Alliant Energy, Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Department and the Winneshiek County Engineer’s office.
“I want to thank all the mutual aid departments for helping extinguish the fire. It goes to show how important mutual aid is between fire departments,” Wilder said. “We had a great response from area departments and a good save.”
No injuries were reported. Firefighters were on the scene until about 3 p.m. Tuesday.
