When illness or injury requires a special kind of care to help a patient remain comfortable and preserve their quality of life, many people turn to hospice.
But hospice does not just provide care for the patient; services extend to the family as well as they face the changing health of their loved one.
With the family in mind, Don White wanted to help. In memory of his wife, Bev, Don gave a donation to the Winneshiek Medical Center Foundation to purchase new furnishings for the dedicated hospice patient room at WMC.
The hospice patient room is available for hospice patients needing acute symptom management or respite, and provides a home-like atmosphere with additional seating and bedroom furniture. Nurses on the in-patient unit collaborate with WMC hospice staff in providing care to the patient and meeting the family’s needs.
Don says, “Families need a nice place to stay if their spouse or family member in hospice is admitted to the hospital.”
Don’s donation provided for a wardrobe, nightstand, rocker/recliner, curtains and artwork.
He adds, “The furniture is nice and will be comfortable for the families visiting patients. I’m glad to be able to help others in Bev’s memory.”
Nancy Haberichter, nurse manager of WMC Hospice, says, “Don’s thoughtful gift will be appreciated by families for many years. When a hospice patient is admitted to the hospital, there are generally family members with them around the clock. It is important to us to provide a comfortable, home-like space for them, and we are thankful for people like Don who help us meet the needs of our patients in such a meaningful way.”
