A Decorah man drowned in the Upper Iowa Iowa River Wednesday night.
The body of Matthew Lundt, 25, of Decorah was recovered at around 10:35 p.m. Wednesday after an extensive search of the area near the College Drive Bridge.
Shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, Decorah Police received a 911 call from a person reporting that her friend was struggling in the river and had failed to resurface after going under water.
Decorah Police officers and the Decorah Fire Department were dispatched to the area, just east of the College Drive Bridge.
Police reported a body was seen briefly about 500 yards downstream from the bridge and quickly submerged and emergency personnel were unable to locate the victim. The Fire Department then established multiple lines of personnel in the river between the College Drive Bridge and the Fifth Street Bridge and called in additional resources for assistance. At about 10:35 p.m., Fire Department personnel located the deceased victim in the river in the area of Dunnings Spring.
The Decorah Fire Department and Decorah Police were assisted by the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Department, Calmar Fire Department, Winneshiek County Ambulance, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Calmar Police Department, Bruening Rock Products, Decorah Street Department and the Allamakee County Sheriff’s Department.
