The Decorah Parks and Recreation Department has looked into ways of extending the season at the Decorah Swimming Pool but has not found a solution, according to Park-Rec Director Andy Nimrod.
The pool closed Sunday.
“All of our lifeguards are either college students or high school students who are either in cross country or football and basically can no longer work after school starts,” he told the Decorah City Council last week.
Students went back to school in Decorah Wednesday.
The Department has considered hiring adults to extend the season, but Nimrod said it’s difficult to find adults who want to work after school or on weekends.
“Those are the main reasons (the season isn’t longer). It’s not so much money, but manpower,” Nimrod said.
He commented that while attendance dropped off in recent weeks, overall, it was a “great season” at the pool.
