"This duo is part of a living tradition of folk music in the Nordic countries as well as in the United States," Martha Griesheimer, who is helping coordinate the event, said. "These young performers embrace musical traditions across national borders and infuse them with new vitality and a high level of musicianship," she added.
There will be a concert in the museum's Bethania Church at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10 available only at the door beginning at 7 p.m.
Earlier in the day, The Blue and The Blond will offer a Scandinavian music workshop from 2-4 p.m. at the Bethania Church. The workshop is $25 and includes admission to the concert. Call Martha Griesheimer at 563-382-9681 to register.
The Blue and The Blond consists of Jutta Rahmel, from Finland, who plays kantele and sings vocals, and Vidar Skrede, from Norway, who plays hardingfele, fiddle, and guitar and sings vocals. Both are musicians known in the Nordic folk music scene, each performing on their respective countries' national instruments-kantele from Finland and hardingfele from Norway. They present tune types from Nordic traditions, such as polska, halling, schottische, and waltz, songs like Finnish rekilaulu and Norwegian ballads, plus original works.
The concert and workshop are arranged in connection with the Fourth Sunday Scandinavian Music Jam, an informal music gathering held at Vesterheim the fourth Sunday of each month from 2-4 p.m. The jam is open to anyone who wants to play along, or just come and listen.
