Pictured here are two Pleasant Township brothers who enlisted in the Civil War on the same day: June 6, 1861. They were with Co. "D," the first group of volunteers from Winneshiek County. They participated in the Seize of Vicksburg and the Battle of Shiloh; and at Shiloh they were part of the group that fought in "The Hornet's Nest." Elijah was eventually captured and sent to the infamous Andersonville Prison and was later released in an exchange of prisoners. Both men returned to Winneshiek County after their three-year enlistment. Learn more about these men and others who participated in the Civil War at the Winneshiek County Historical Society's Civil War Commemoration Saturday, Sept. 14. At 1 p.m. there will be a "laying of the wreath" at the monument on the Courthouse Grounds. At 2 p.m. there will be a program at Decorah Lutheran with Iowa Artist Bob Welch performing "Songs of the Civil War." This program is part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Winneshiek County Historical Society. The exhibition is free and the public is invited.
