The Decorah City Council personnel committee has recommended no raises for Council members or the mayor.
Last month, Mayor Don Arendt brought up the topic of compensation. Council members currently are paid $40 for each official Council meeting, and the mayor receives $350 per month.
Arendt said the last time there was a raise was in 1999. He said since he and all the Council members except for Rachel Vagts are up for re-election this fall, it might be a good time to discuss the matter.
However, Vagts, chair of the personnel committee, reported during Tuesday night's Council meeting that her committee had "no interest" in pursuing raises at this time.
She said City Manager Chad Bird and City Clerk Wanda Hemesath provided figures on the compensation cities of comparable size pay council members and mayors.
Vagts said the data showed 10 cities pay their mayors more and 10 cities pay less. Sixteen cities pay council members more and three pay less. The cities that pay more, are "pretty close" in compensation to Decorah, she said.
