The Winneshiek County Conservation Board has been awarded a $487,025 Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) grant for a new county park.
The Board hired Northeast Iowa Resource Conservation and Development Director Lora Friest to write the REAP grant application to purchase the "Neste property." It is located along the proposed new Dry Run Trail between Highway 9 and Highway 52 two miles from Decorah and will become the Neste Valley Recreation and Wildlife Area. The county applied for $700,000, but since the REAP program wasn't fully funded this year, $487,025 was allocated.
The grant award is not official until it is approved by the Natural Resource Commission Thursday, Oct. 10. Winneshiek County Conservation Board Director Barb Schroeder said more details about the new park would be released after the Commission meets.
