There is a vacancy on the Decorah City Council.

Julie Fischer, who had represented Ward 2 on the Council, has moved out of her ward and can no longer serve in the position. The Council is expected to decide at its next meeting whether to fill the opening by appointment or by a special election.

If the Council decides to make an appointment, citizens of Ward 2 may file a petition calling for a special election within 14 days of the city publishing its intent to appoint. The petition must be signed by either 15 percent of the number of votes cast in the last election for Ward 2, or 200 signatures, whichever is less.

Citizens who live in Ward 2 who are interested in filling the position should contact the city clerk's office at 563-382-3651. A map of the city's wards is posted on home page of the city's website, decorahia.org. Ward 2 is east of River Street, south of Water Street, west of Fair and Pearl streets to Highway 9 and west of Pleasant Avenue.

"I hate to see you go," Mayor Don Arendt told Fischer during Monday night's City Council meeting.

"I do appreciate your service ... I know you have not missed a meeting since you began serving. You have been diligent with your duties."

"I would like to say I really have appreciated the trust that the constituents in Ward 2 afforded me in allowing me to be on the Council," Fischer said. "I have learned a great deal. The experience has increased my faith in city government. I've met some of the finest people I've ever worked with in this room."

Fischer was elected in the fall of 2011 and took office Jan. 1, 2012.

"It's been a very busy 17 months. For those on the Council who have served several years, what a gift it is. What a service you do for this community. I feel humble and grateful for all your service. Thank you very much for everything."
