The Winneshiek County Sheriff's Department recently released details of a helicopter emergency landing south of Decorah Sunday, Sept. 30.
A helicopter made an emergency landing in a corn field a couple of miles south of Decorah in Decorah Township. The pilot, Dave Tappe of Churdan, and passenger, Kaleb McNeely of Texas, were not injured. However, both occupants were taken to Winneshiek Medical Center for examination.
The helicopter is owned by Source Helicopters and was on the way to Green Bay, Wis. to do utility work when the engine failed.
Tappe, 26, was able to safely bring the helicopter down by minimizing the speed of the impact with the ground. After making contact with the ground, the helicopter rolled and came to rest on its side. Tappe and McNeely were able to free themselves from the wreckage and make their way out of the cornfield to the property owner's house, where they received assistance.
The Sheriff's Department initially investigated the incident until the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board arrived the next day to complete the investigation.
