The Winneshiek County Democrats' Halloween Gala is 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, from 5:30 to 7:30 at the Winneshiek Wildberry Winery.
The event features appetizers, desserts, coffee and a cash wine bar.
Two candidates for the Democratic Primary for the First Congressional District will offer remarks as well as Roger Thomas, representative for Iowa House District 55 and county supervisor officials, Dean Thompson and Mark Kuhn.
Anesa Kajtazovic, 26, of Waterloo, has served in the Iowa House since 2011 and became the youngest woman ever elected to the Legislature. She is a naturalized American citizen who immigrated to Iowa in 1997 from Bosnia. She is a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa. In the Legislature, she has served on the Appropriation Committee, among others.
"I am running for Congress in Iowa's 1st District because I believe that government should make people's lives better. Washington needs transformational leadership and I can bring a fresh perspective," she said.
Monica Vernon operates the business, Vernon Research, and has been active in local government, serving on several boards and commissions before running for City Council in 2007. She was re-elected to her seat in 2011.
Vernon cites her experience with the flood of 2008 and the recovery giving her more experience dealing with the federal government than usual city council members in Iowa.
The cost for the Gala is a free will donation.
