A Nordic Dancer trip to Norway is closer to becoming a reality thanks to a donation by Decorah’s Dan Huebner.
Huebner recently donated $10,000 to the Nordic Dancers to help them reach their goal of traveling to Norway to perform and tour during the summer of 2017.
According to Nordic Dancing Director Ann Kephart, the current Junior Nordic Dancers recently set a goal of traveling to Norway their junior year of high school.
The Nordic Dancers were founded by a number of community members nearly 50 years ago as a way to bring the folk traditions of Scandinavia alive during Decorah's annual Nordic Fest celebration.
"Little did they know the Nordic Dancers would become one of Decorah's greatest traditions and ambassadors themselves," said Kephart.
The last group to tour Norway was in 1987.
Amy Carlson Bruening, a member of that group, recalled, " It was a trip of a lifetime."
Director Dwayne Lundvedt said the upcoming trip is "a big dream, but the dancers and their families are dedicated to making it a reality. We have been so fortunate to have the support of many community members, organizations and businesses, who believe in this very special opportunity. For many of these young people, it will be their first and only trip overseas. We want to extend a special heart-felt 'Tusen Takk' to Dan Huebner of Decorah. Dan is an exceptional community leader who truly believes in the capacity to enrich the lives of young people via travel, education and bridging cultural gaps. This is a phenomenal way to do a "Fermana Dance" kick-off to our fund raising goal."
Area young people try out for Nordic Dancing during their third grade year of school.
They commit to the dancing group through their senior year of high school, attending weekly practices for eight months of the year, representing Decorah at many area and out-of-town festivals, and perform each year at Nordic Fest.
"We know tthis is a big endeavor, but we are excited about dancing our way all the way to Norway," said Lundtvedt.
