Rachel Vagts has accepted a job in Kentucky and will be resigning her at-large position on the Decorah City Council.
Vagts, currently the Luther College archivist, has been hired as the head of special collections and archives at Berea College in Berea, Ky. She is currently serving her second, four-year term on the Council. Vagts starts her new job Feb. 1; her Council position expires Dec. 31, 2015. She plans to move early next year.
"I'm excited about the new professional opportunity, but sad to be leaving Decorah," Vagts said.
City Manager Chad Bird said the Council would likely be discussing how to fill the upcoming vacancy during its next meeting Monday, Nov. 18. The Council can choose to appoint someone to the position or hold a special election, which costs about $3,000.
Before serving on the Council, Vagts was a member of the Decorah Planning and Zoning Commission. She is chair of the Council's personnel committee.
