The Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Northeast Iowa Community College and Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Commission are offering a candidate class Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 5:30 p.m. at NICC Wilder Center.
Anyone interested in running for a City Council office is invited to attend.
New candidates will have the opportunity to gain valuable insight from people who have experience working with city councils and leading their communities. Guest presenters for the evening include Decorah City Manager Chad Bird, and Ossian and Fort Atkinson City Clerk Joyce Bakewell. A council representative from an outlying community has also been invited.
The class will address scope of work, budgeting, ethics, conflict of interest and running an election. It will also be a chance to ask any questions potential candidates may have.
"Being a community leader as an elected official is one of the most important jobs a person can hold." Nikki Brevig, executive director for the Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce said.
"There are many facets to the position and our goal is to provide a better understanding of the job expectations as they are making the decision to run for office."
The class is Tuesday, Sept. 10 at NICC from 5:30 to 7 p.m. It will run approximately one and a half hours to provide attendees with as much information as possible. A light snack will be provided.
Anyone interested in attending can RSVP to NICC at Kendra Kleve 1-800-728-2256 ext. 312 or e-mail at email@example.com.
City council elections will be held in November.
Candidates can already begin filing nomination papers through their City Clerk's office or County Auditor. The deadline to submit the papers is September 19. All Winneshiek County communities have representatives with terms expiring.
