Kellie Sharp's death from a fall at Palisades Park is believed to be an accident.
Sharp, a 16-year-old Decorah junior, died after falling from the Park's popular scenic overlook in Decorah Friday evening.
"There is nothing at this point that would suggest foul play," Decorah Police Chief Bill Nixon said.
Sharp was with a couple of acquaintances before she fell.
"We took brief statements from them the night of the incident. As you can imagine, they were pretty upset. We'll be following up with them," Nixon said.
The Decorah Police Department was called to Palisades Park at about 8 p.m. Friday after receiving a report that a girl had fallen from the park. When officers arrived, they found Sharp's body at the bottom of the hill below the overlook.
The investigation is ongoing and an official cause of death is pending results of an autopsy by the Iowa Medical Examiner's Office.
"Hopefully we'll get a little better comprehensive idea of all the circumstances after we have a chance to follow up with people and get the medical examiner's report," Nixon said.
It can take three to four weeks before the medical examiner's report is completed, he said.
The Decorah Police Department was assisted by the Winneshiek County Sheriff's Office, Winneshiek Medical Center Paramedic Service, the Decorah Fire Department and the Iowa State Patrol.
Additional counselors were on hand at Decorah High School Monday to help students deal with the news.
