A public meeting on frac sand mining is tomorrow (Wednesday, Feb. 20), at 7:30 p.m. in the Decorah High School auditorium.
A local steering committee, consisting of Bob Watson, Lyle Otte, Dick Jansen, Boyd Wasson, Craig Cutting and Steve McCargar, have organized the meeting, which will be moderated by Otte.
The group has invited Ric Zarwell, president of the Allamakee County Protectors, to update attendees regarding the frac sand mining discussion in Allamakee County. The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors recently passed an 18-month frac sand mining moratorium.
Representatives from the Allamakee County Protectors will be lobbying in Des Moines Wednesday. If the schedule allows, they hope to return to Decorah in time to attend the meeting.
The meeting will be split into 10-minute segments, which will include information about the geology of Northeast Iowa, the impact of mining activities on public roads and bridges, possible public health issues arising from sand-mining activities, an update of the situation in Allamakee County, a 10-minute clip of the film "Frac Sand Land" and a question-and-answer session.
Following the meeting, Frac Sand Land will be shown in its full 42-minute version.
