Vergene Simenson (Miller) and Tom Gillman, both formerly of Decorah, were married on the 9th green of Silvercrest Golf Course July 6, 2012.
The two high school sweethearts became reacquainted in April, 2011, when Tom, while reading the obituary of his aunt, Tudy Holmberg, in the online version of the Decorah Journal, came across Vergene's address in the obituary of her mother, Verna, which was in the same paper.
Over the next several months, they renewed their high school friendship through email, phone calls, text messages and cross-country visits. Steve Jacobsen, retired pastor of First Lutheran Church, married them on this very hot summer day.
Vergene is a retired 4th grade teacher, residing in Neenah, Wis., and Tom teaches computer science at College of the Desert in Palm Desert, Calif. The couple will divide their time between California and Wisconsin, while they both still enjoy trying to improve their golf games.
