Scott Helms has joined the staff of Schluter-Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, as an apprentice.
Helms grew up in Hart, Mich., where he graduated from Hart High School in 1999. After graduation he attended John A. Gupton mortuary college in Nashville, Tenn. After he graduated from college, he worked as a funeral director in Michigan.
In 2007 he decided to go back to school and get a bachelors degree in business from Upper Iowa University. He moved to West Union and attended Upper Iowa University until graduation in 2009.
"I fell in love with Northeast Iowa and decided to make this my permanent home," Helms said.
Shortly after graduating from UIU he received a job in sales with Art's Way Scientific in Monona. He worked there until deciding to get back into the funeral industry last year. He recently took his Iowa State Law exam for mortuary science through Des Moines Area Community College and started his apprenticeship with Schluter-Balik funeral home.
"I have to thank Mark and Karen for giving me the opportunity, and I look forward to serving the Decorah community and the surrounding area," he said.
"He's a great addition to our staff and are we happy to have him with us," Karen Schluter said.
