In 2008 the Czech Heritage Partnership established the Family History and Document Center in Protivin at 131 South Main Street.
Since then the organization has been accumulating records associated with the history of the local area.
"We welcome all who are interested in learning about the history of the tri-county area (Howard, Chickasaw and Winneshiek Counties plus all of N.E. Iowa) to visit us," a representative of the organization said.
"We have perhaps one of the largest collections of obituaries in the area. We also have a library of local history books, including many town and county history books."
Local cemetery records and several family genealogies are available. Plat books are available back to the late 1880s.
Several scrapbooks documenting lives of local individuals now deceased have been shared by relatives. The scrapbooks have been copied, indexed and are now available for interested readers to review.
The Family History and Document Center is open Thursdays from 10 a.m. -4 p.m. and Saturdays from noon-4 p.m.
