Jorgensen taught 26 years at the high school and college levels and has a master's degree in educational psychology. A graduate of The Coaches Training Institute, Jorgensen is a qualified, professional coach. Through classes, workshops and individual sessions, she maintains a commitment to sustainable living.

In a recent interview with Decorah Newspapers, Jorgensen describes her purpose in writing "The Way of the SAGE: A Workbook for Authentic and Joyous Living."

Decorah Newspapers: When and why did you write this book?

Mary Jorgensen:This book represents the SAGE concept, with four foundations for a resilient life: Spirituality, Authenticity, Gratitude and Enjoyment.

I wrote the book in 2012 for a series of personal growth workshops.

My inquiry into resilience grew from an invitation to address a courageous group of cancer survivors. They asked for a workshop that would motivate them to "get up in the morning."

This is a challenge for many of us who haven't been blessed by good fortune or resilient traits. I wondered if we can actually become more resilient, more gritty more sturdy in the face of life's challenges.

The answer is, of course, yes we can. So, I began developing tools for accessing those traits in a practical way, considering that few of us have time or emotional energy to spare.

I'll always be grateful to the group for inviting me down the path of understanding and articulating for others what it takes to live fully, our faces to the winds of life, to live as effectively as we can each day.

DN: The book has been described as an "interactive workbook." What does that mean?

MJ: The "interactive" nature of a workbook suggests a communication between the author and the reader.

The nature of the personal growth work is to interact with the topic. When I meet with individual clients, we co-create a plan for growth that is dynamic. I wanted to bring that interactivity into written form. So, I've included questions to prompt the reader to respond, to consider the implications of what I've written and make some notes with their own thoughts.

It's often in reflecting that the work of personal growth takes shape, whether in reading and responding privately, or in a group setting. I've conducted SAGE classes with the workbook as the basis for homework and discussion, which have been well-received.

DN: Who is your target audience for this book?

MJ: Many of us seek to improve our relationships, work settings, physical and emotional wellness. We search for easily attainable benefits that we can learn and apply quickly and notice how much better we see the world, how much energy we have, how things just seem to be working out.

The target is to realize life can be better, and to learn ways to make that happen. It's not a "woo-woo" book, nor is it about waving a magic wand. It's for people who are keen to invest a small amount of effort and reap huge rewards.

DN: In what kinds of ways will this book benefit the people who use it?

MJ: The benefits of using a book like this come from the way readers apply it.

People who seek to grow, become better persons, live more fully, have more satisfaction in life will want to know how to acquire those tools. The SAGE program provides simple insights and exercises to help readers find those tools in themselves, and inspires readers to follow through.

Though "simple" in nature, these exercises call for effort. I believe in the power of individuals to live happier, more satisfying lives by practicing the SAGE program. It represents the culmination of my career as an educator, training as a life coach and wellness coach, and a wealth of deep spiritual and emotional study.
