Winneshiek Medical Center is offering Winneshiek County senior citizens free coupons to be used at the Decorah Area Farmers' Market this season.
Participants will receive $10 in coupons for locally grown fruits and vegetables.
The WMC Farmers' Market Senior Nutrition Program is funded by The United Way of Winneshiek County, with participating vendors from the Decorah Area Farmers' Market. The coupons can only be used for fruits and vegetables and may not be exchanged for money. There is a limited amount of coupons available and they will be distributed until they are gone.
Recipients of these coupons must be Winneshiek County residents, age 65 and older, and bring proof of their residency and age to the distribution site. A WMC Farmers' Market Senior Nutrition Program ID card or driver’s license are both acceptable identifying documents. If seniors received 2013 coupons, they are asked to bring their orange WMC Farmers' Market Senior Nutrition Program ID card to help coordinators evaluate the success of the program. There are no income guidelines to participate in this program.
The coupons will be distributed on the following dates:
• Wednesday, June 11 -- Decorah Area Farmers' Market location; 3 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
• Thursday June 12 -- Decorah Senior Center, 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Angie Kerndt, RDN, LD, clinical dietitian at Winneshiek Medical Center comments, “The Farmers' Market Senior Nutrition Program is an excellent use of the dollars donated by United Way. Not only does the funding stay local and assist senior citizens in our county, it promotes healthy eating and supports our local growers at the same time. I encourage all seniors to take advantage of this program as a way to incorporate more fresh, healthy foods into their diet this summer.”
