EIGHTY YEARS AGO: Temperance is to be the policy of the Iowa Liquor Commission. President indications are that it may be well into the late summer before hard liquor will be available in Decorah. Only a few large cities will be the first to have state liquor stores. Just how and where they will be located has not yet been revealed. Debate about the evil liquor continues.
…A young Decorah man evaded police in a dash in a speedy auto the other day. He faces charge of speeding, passing stop signs and liquor possession. Warrants are out for his arrest according to Motorcycle Policeman Alton Nelson and Deputy Sheriff Fred O’Boy.
…Eighty cattle and hogs were burned in an $8,000 blaze at the Decorah Hospital farm, eight miles northwest of Decorah. The hospital board plans to rebuild the barn and other structures destroyed in the blaze.
…The ladies of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church will sponsor a fund-raising dinner here March 17. Roast pork, mashed potatoes and gravy, string beans, salad, rolls, pie and coffee. All for 35 cents per ticket.
…Coast-to-Coast Store in Decorah is having its annual wallpaper sale. Many rolls are priced at 5 cents per roll.
…The Priscilla Shop has moved from the Winneshiek Hotel to 114 Winnebago Street. An auspicious opening was held a few Saturdays ago. The event was largely attended. The business is being conducted by Mrs. Josie Amundson and by Mrs. Effie Anderson.
SEVENTY YEARS AGO: Pvt. Norman Gunhus has arrived in Ridgeway to spend a two-week furlough with his parents. Then he will be transferred to Fort Ord, Calif. He has been at Camp Fannin in Texas.

…A public lecture titled “The Coming Surrender of Germany” will be later this month at the C.K. Preus Auditorium at Luther College. Dr. Eric Mann, a witness to the invasion of Poland and Norway, will be guest speaker. Admission is 40 cents (tax included).
…Mary Lou and Dorothy Malanaphy entertained the 4-H Club at South Bluffton the other afternoon at their home.
