Venice Decay 1. Preston Lawing
Venice Decay 1. Preston Lawing
ArtHaus will host a free First Friday event Friday, Oct. 4, from 7-9 p.m., at ArtHaus and ArtHaus Studio (508 and 516 W. Water Street).

ArtHaus will unveil an exhibition featuring artwork by Winona-based artist, Preston Lawing. A variety of media featured in two new bodies of work will be showcased during this opening event and will continue to be on display through Oct.31.

There is a brief artist's talk at 8:15 p.m., Oct. 4

In addition to showcasing artwork by Lawing, the opening reception will feature wine tasting compliments of the event's sponsor, Oneota Community Co-op.

Lawing's month-long exhibition will consist of two separate bodies of work inspired by recent travels and experiences.

In the main ArtHaus space, he will exhibit recent prints, pastels and drawings created after a trip to Italy last spring.

The ArtHaus Studio will feature smaller mixed media works from a recently completed series entitled "Cabinets of Curiosities," based on what he identifies as his "family experience of hoarding and collecting." Lawing was inspired to create the pieces in "Cabinets of Curiosities" after working with his siblings to move his mother out of her home of fifty years, and into a retirement community.

Lawing has always been interested in architectural forms, civic sculpture and the man-made structures that surround us. Before completing his MFA at the University of Florida, he worked with Harvey Littleton in developing the glass printmaking form of Vitreography and operated Blackwatch Graphics, a collaborative print studio working with artists from around the world.

Lawing currently teaches drawing, printmaking and creativity at Saint Mary's University of Minnesota in Winona, while leading students in summer study abroad programs in Italy. He trained with several National Living Treasure printmakers in Japan during a six-week residency, and exhibits and lectures nationally and internationally.
