The final ArtHaus Poetry Slam of the season is Friday, April 19, at 8 p.m. at the Elks Lodge.
A poetry reading by scholar, storyteller and poet Dr. Richard Simon Hanson (with harpist Otter Dreaming) called "Poetry for Various Reasons" will be offered at ArtHaus Sunday, April 21, at 3pm.
The ArtHaus Poetry Slam is sponsored by Dragonfly Books; community radio station KPVL 89.1 will be recording the Poetry Slam for broadcast.
Featured artist, Chelanga Langeson of Minneapolis, winner of the last ArtHaus Poetry Slam, will begin the evening, followed by "Original Voices" which offers an opportunity for anyone to perform two minutes or less of their own poetry.
The "Slam" invites participants to perform two minutes or less of original poetry in a high-spirited, good-natured competition, complete with applause-o-meter and prizes. Memorization is encouraged in this category, where performance and commitment are valued as much as the quality of the poem.
Those wishing to perform in "Original Voices" or to compete in "The Slam" should call ArtHaus in advance to reserve a spot.
To sign up, or for more information, call ArtHaus at 563-382-5440. The show begins at 8 and doors open at 7:30. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students. The event is recommended for adults, age 16 and up.
Dr. Richard Simon Hanson will present "Poetry for Various Reasons," an hour long program of original poetry, offered in collaboration with harpist Otter Dreaming, Sunday, April 21. Dr. Hanson, noted scholar, performer, and Luther College professor emeritus is a well-known storyteller, but he is also a life-long poet.
"April is an apt month to celebrate poetry," says Hanson. "Reading poetry is like planting seeds -- hopefully some poems germinate in the listener and produce something unique for each person."
"Poetry for Various Reasons" will be performed at ArtHaus (508 W. Water St.) from 3-4 p.m. Sunday, April 21. It is offered as a benefit for ArtHaus with a suggested donation at the door of $5 or more. All ages welcome.
For more information, call ArtHaus at 382-5440.
