This energetic spoken-word event is held at Decorah’s Elks Lodge (402 W. Main St.), and is sponsored by Dragonfly Books.
This month is National Poetry Month and ArtHaus presents local poet and past slam winner Charlie Langton as the evening’s featured artist.
Langton will offer several of his own poems as well as a performance in collaboration with musician Karl Nilsson. Langton’s credits include an MFA from the University of Iowa’s Writers Workshop and a published book of poems called “Keep Silence, But Speak Out.”
Following the featured artist, “Original Voices” provides an opportunity for anyone to share up to three minutes of their own poetry in an open mic setting.
“The Slam” invites participants to perform an original poem in a high-spirited, good-natured competition, complete with applause-o-meter and prizes. Memorization is encouraged in this category, where performance and commitment are valued as highly as the quality of the poem.
Those wishing to perform in “Original Voices” or to compete in “The Slam” should call ArtHaus in advance to reserve a spot.
To sign up, or for more information, call ArtHaus at 563-382-5440. Doors open at 7:30, and the show begins at 8. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students. The event is recommended for adults, age 16 and up.
