"Music in the Shape of a Pear" concert series will present "Music from the year 1973" at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall on the Luther campus.

The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission and features concert music by William Alwyn, Alan Hovhaness, Einojuhani Rautavaara, Frederic Rzewski, Harvey Sollberger, Stephen Sondheim and Toru Takemitsu.

The recital also includes popular music from 1973 by Pink Floyd, Marvin Gaye, ZZ Top, Wet Willie, Stevie Wonder and Led Zeppelin. Luther composition instructors

Brooke Joyce and Steve Smith, co-curators of the concert, were both born in 1973, so the concert serves as a 40th celebration for them.

Featured in the concert are music faculty members Ann Benjamin, Carol Hester, Xiao Hu, Helen James, Brooke Joyce, Karen Kanakis, Joseph Kromholz, Eric Kutz and Jacob Lassetter as well as student performer Hanna Josephson.

Special guests include band "Absolute Hoot," featuring Erik Berg, Jeni Grouws, Nori Hadley, Steve Smith and Mark Stumme.

"Music in the Shape of a Pear" is a semi-annual concert series directed by Joyce. Performances include collaborations between Luther faculty, staff and students, local musicians and guest recitalists.
